MD-22 (fe5efb31-22c3-5212-8a6b-4af960ee5cd7)

The MD‑22 is a Chinese, jet‑propelled unmanned aerial vehicle developed jointly by the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Mechanics and the Guangdong Aerodynamic Research Academy (GARA). With a 4.5‑metre wingspan and a reported top speed of Mach 7 (~8 645 km/h), the platform is not armed; instead it functions as a high‑speed testbed for advanced air‑breathing propulsion such as scramjets or dual‑mode ramjets. The MD‑22 can be launched via rocket‑assist from a specialized Xian H‑6 bomber, from the TB‑001 “Scorpion‑D” carrier‑drone, or from high‑altitude balloons, and is equipped for autonomous take‑off and runway recovery. Its primary role is to validate hypersonic flight‑control, separation‑fairing, and launch‑integration technologies that will underpin future Chinese hypersonic weapons and ISR concepts.
