The Orion is a Russian‑made medium‑altitude long‑endurance (MALE) UAV developed by Kronstadt Group in partnership with Premier Magnetics. Powered by electric propulsion, it can loiter for 24‑30 hours at up to 7 500 m, covering 1 440 km with a cruise speed of 200 km/h. With a 16‑m wingspan and a 250 kg payload, it carries guided munitions such as the Vikhr‑1V anti‑tank missile and the S‑8000 Banderol cruise missile, enabling both ISR (intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance) and strike missions. Operated by the Russian Ground Forces, Orion has seen combat in the 2022‑2024 Ukraine war, where it performed reconnaissance flights and precision attacks, though it has suffered losses to air‑defences. Export variants (Orion‑E) are marketed for foreign customers; Ethiopia received a batch in early 2026. The platform’s long endurance, moderate speed, and modular payload make it a versatile tool for persistent battlefield awareness and limited‑scale precision strike.
